Double Entry Journal #13

I chose to do my web quest on The American Civil Rights Movement because I feel that this a period in our histroy that we do not study enough. It is taught to our students but not as a huge focus. We all know who Martin Luther King Jr is and Rosa Parks, but do we know about Emmett Till, Medger Evers, or the three young men killed during Freedom Summer. I chose this to help bring these people and the whole movement to the eyes and minds of a new generation who may see this as ancient history. The video "Seperate But Not Equal" was chosen because it introduces the Civil Rights in a way that is visual and intersting. It shows people, places and events that started the movement and as a way to get the students started on the topic.

Double Entry Journal #12

Which two of example WebQuests are the best ones? Why?
the two best for me were the Underground Railroad and the Egyptian. It could have been the historian in me, but they really grabbed me in the way that it made finding and using the information you find online.

Which two are the worst? Why?
The worst two would be Design and School Greens and Egyptian. The Egyptian was on of the worst for me because when you opened it up the look and layout was different from the rest and took you back and was so cluttered and unorganized that is was almost confusing. It was also very over whelming.
The School Greens was on of the worst because there was no final product that was truly tangible. You had the final project and book and design concept you created but it would be even better if at the end you actually had a garden to create and use.

What do best and worst mean to you?
Best and worst mean that in the end there is something tangible and fun that you were truly able to show. You can create a design but not putting it to use is pointless. You also have to be able to fully understand and follow the directions. Quick and to the point instructions to keep students engaged and interested.

Web Quest Work Sheet

WebQuest
Strengths
Weaknesses
Grow School Greens
This does require the use of the web for research and comparison, though it can be done in a library in any book on plants.

From a Technophile point of view this WebQuest is lacking in a web use aspect. No strengths for me.

Where is My Hero?
The use of the internet to do research on the idea of whom and what is a hero.

No real use of the internet except for research.

Underground Railroad
The constant use of the internet for research and then the interactive game of participation in a virtual underground website.

 No weakness.
Ice Cream
 None that I can find

No use of the internet for this WebQuest. Too many worksheets.
Would be awesome to design the poster using a computer/internet tool, site.

Ancient Egypt
Getting to use Pixie to create 3 illustrations is great. Keeps me on the computer and allows me to make things online. Also gives me instructions to properly use the internet for research

 No weakness.

Double Entry Journal #11

Watching this video brought some intersting issues to the for front that as just a teaching student never thought about. Yes teaching and the process of teaching is messy. You have to think of what to teach, how to teach it and if the process you are using is working. In the area of how to teach; pedogogy, there are so many factors that have to be taken in to consideration as well as content knowledge of the subject being taught. I liked how it said that the best teachers are not always a person who is the subject, such as a mathmatiction teaching math, or a psycologist teaching psycology. Its how you teach the knowlege and knowing HOW to teach it.
It is also getting more difficult to teach with technology advancing at such a rapid rate. Who knows that what we are even learning in this class will be relavent in 3 years. (I hope it is because I a enjoying all this). So we have to think of ways to keep up with it all and then learn it all ourselves and find ways to use it relevently in the classroom in regards to the content we are teaching.
With the new technology advancemnts the idea of learning has changed. I loved the example of Plato and that the gist of the quote was that we are losing rention knowledge because we can just look it up. Who needs to beable to orally relay information when they can just turn on a computer to find our information. In this sence we need to teach students how to weed through the "crap" information and find the truth. In some ways that can go under the idea of literacy technologies.

Web 2.0

Threddie: Brainstorming. Simplified.

-This tool is used to create a brainstorm and invite others to post and comment on your posting.
-This tool would be used while students are participating in group project and can brainstorm together with those in their group only.
-When students are doing a project as a group in any content area from english to history and do not always have time to meet, or classroom time is -limited this allows them to get together online and share their thoughts. This can also be used by the teacher to see who is participating and be able to give credit to those who did work and those that did not.
-Before using this tool teachers will have to consider when and which students can or may not be able to access the internet and what can or can not be posted. Also how secure the postings are and if only those that are invited can view it.

Quote:
"As students go through this process, over and over, they learn to develop their own ideas,
try them out, test the boundaries, experiment with alternatives, get input from others, and generate new ideas based on their experiences" (Resnick 2007).

Response:
I chose this quote because while reading this article it reminded me of when I was in school and the excitement and joy I felt when I created something after trying and trying and finally mastering the assignment and wanting to continue on that path of discovery. In today's world of constant technology the same old creative projects are just not the same, and we have to find those new ways to keep our students inspired. The same old connecting a lightbulb to a battery is not as cool as a Cricket/Scratch project. When children find the fun in learning it and they get to be the creaters it keeps them going and wanting to do more. It makes them share what they have learned and teach it to others, throwing in a social side to it.

Related Rescource:
Software that meets the needs and interests of children and enhances their creative thought and artistic expression enables them to do the following; discover, invent, and control their symbolic world, apply a range of skills and abilities, and enhance children’s social interactions" (Isenber,Jolong 2006)

I chose this quote becaue it reinstates the ideas of Resnick that the use of software and mulit media programs not only create a more creative thinker but inhance other aspects of student learning.

Gardens of Time reflection

Gardens of Time

1. Interaction: You invite friends to be neighbor. By accepting and having neighbors you interact by visiting each other's gardens and leaving gifts. You can also interact by asking neighbors to send you material you may need to finish a quest on the game.
2. Origination: During the game you have to create a garden of objects retrieved from the different historical scenes you visit during the game.
3. Exploring: The game requires you to visit different scenes in history and discover objects that do not belong in those scenes. Though you are required to find these objects as fast as you can, you are asked to revisit these scenes over and over to find more and more objects. During this sequence of events you learn what objects are by name or sight and how they fit or do not fit in that scene.
4. Ordered Problems: The scenes of the game are at first easier to navigate but as you continue with the quests
and building your garden the quests become harder and require you to find more items in the same amount of time. This requires you to memorize what things are and where they are to accomplish the quest set before you.
5. Context: This game is based on historical places and events and during the game you learn about what an object is you may not have known and what it looks like. It also teaches you where these places were and what they were and why they might be significant.

Quote:
"It was not the most outlandish thing she might’ve said, given how little was known about learning disabilities in the early 1950s, and how little training a teacher" (Schultz 2011)

Response:
I chose this quote because until the mid to late 1970's there were no special education teachers, class rooms, or specifications. Learning Disabilities are students with average or above average intelligence that have a difficult time reading. Sadly some teacher still ignore the issue of learning disabilities or try to use that as an excuse to not help or get rid of "problem" children. I know its difficult having upwards to 32 children in a classroom but we have to make time to be the teacher our students need us to be.

I chose the West Virginia RTI guide  (Response To Intervention) because it is a program to combat this exact problem. RTI also called the 3tier system catches possible learning disabilities in the first grade and allows children to get the help they need to achieve their reading goals.

"The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) provides school districts the opportunity to develop research-based procedures for determining whether a student has a specific learning disability.  Traditional identification procedures required a severe discrepancy between the student’s intellectual ability and academic achievement that was often not evidenced until second or third grade, well after the time that most children acquire beginning reading skills.  As a result, young struggling readers often have not received the timely and adequate reading instruction required to prevent lifelong reading difficulties" (RTIguide).

Voki

During the process of recording my reflection on Voki I noticed several things needing to be changed. I noticed that many of my sentences were redundant and just restated information I had already used, just in a different way. While reading my reflection out loud I could hear the way I tried to use too sophisticated wording and ended up making it sound jumbled and unclear. Following that observation I went back in and toned down the wording and rearranged the sentences to be clearer. I also noticed the over use of the word I in many sentences. This required me to restructure those sentences and find a way to represent me in a way that was not I.

Quote: "we need to anticipate that the shift from text-only to multimedia environments will cause a combination of excitement and anxiety in our schools in the short term. Teachers will find that they cannot guide and evaluate students' multimedia projects as effectively as they can the text-based projects that they are used to" (Ohler2000).

ResponseI chose this quote because it exibits one main issue with using new technology is knowing how to use it. For many teacher they are either not away of these technologies or do not know how to use them. The use of smart boards in classrooms are still few and far inbetween, and not many even know what they are or how to use them. We are lucky enough to be taking this class that we are being taught, what, where and how to use these programs and websites. I already have many ideas in mind for using the programs we have already learned about in just six weeks of class. For many teachers and educators they did not get this oppertunity and can not utilize these things. It will be our job to educate fellow teachers on these programs, how to use them, and how to apply them to lessons. Most school have no programs for the advancment of technology skills and literacy. Luckly in a few years these technologies will more then likely be used widely in schools, but until then we will have to just flounder in the wind figuring them out, and hopfully being able to teach them to others. Until new technologies are fully utilized in schools outside help will have to be hired to teach them to teachers and students.

This article in PCWorld.com talks about the use of InkScape in public schools in Los Altos, CA. It descusses how using these new technologies allows students to use thier creative skills in fun new ways. It also proves that the student's teachers are not teaching them these tecnologys but are being taught by another teacher in a Digital Learning Program. Why not train the other teachers to use, and teach students how to use these programs to ensure that all students are learning this not just a select few. It also states that not all schools are utilizing this kind of Digital Learning program.

Deconstructing Arnold

1. What do you see? (Describe the pictures, objects, colors, etc...)
In the first picture Arnold is bigger then life, and is how we are use to seeing him; big, bad, and powerful. It is very loud in color with tons of red, black, white, and yellow. Those colors and large bold print are used to excite you or "pump you up".

In the second picture Arnold is toned down, cool, calm. He is trying to look "trustworthy" and personable. The colors are mellow, and patriotic without over doing it. They are trying to accomplish this by using cooler colors of white, light blue; with very little hits of red and black to keep your eye drown with out being too loud.

2. How does he make you feel?
The first picture makes me feel a little overwhelmed. It is so loud and bright that it makes me either look away or read it as quickly as I can. If I was into this kind of magazine it would make me interested in the articles.

The second picture makes me feel interested in what he is marketing himself for. It also kind of bores me, its a little uninspiering and dull.

3. How do those "looks" influence how you feel?
The first picture looks strong, big, powerful; all those things I associate with Arnold. This picture is comfortable to me, because this is how I see him, as the Terminator, when I think of Arnold.

The second picture give me an uneasy feeling; almost untrustworthy. It is not the Arnold I see when I think about him. It's almost like he is playing at a game; putting on someone else's clothes. He is trying to sell himself as something else that I am not use to seeing and freaks me out a little and I want to say "put on the glasses, Say "ill be back'". It seems unreal.

4. What do you think about this person?
In the first picture I think of this person as the actor I know and actually enjoy watching. The good, sometimes sad, though guy who always saves the day and defeats the bad guys.

In the second picture I think of this person as a successful individual that is open, friendly and wants to do something for me. I think he is a bit cheesy and campy. I think he needs to get dirty, pick up a rocket launcher and save the day.

5. What lifestyles, values, points of view are represented or omitted?
The first picture is represting a group of intense men. Men who are either, interested in health, muscle, working out and looking good. It may be for men who are middle to upper middle class who can afford the time and money needed to obtain this look.

The second picture is representing "interesting" people. People who are a bit more on the wealthier side. The average man does not read this magazine. It represents people of with a higher education that would know who these people or subject are. It uses language that is not used in everyday conversations like "dubious and allies".

6. What are the differences between the two covers? What techniques are used to attract your attention? Pay attention to body language, clothing, camera angle, lighting, color, eye contact, etc...
In the first picture the way Arnold is posing sideways, face forward, bicep bulging, sunglasses on, cut on his forehead, he is showing a tough, powerful man that every guy wants to be like and every girl wants. The flames add to the tough guy, not afraid of anything look.

In the second cover Arnold is well lit, smile on his face, white teeth, expensive suit, ring, finger pointing at YOU, and arms open in a casual "I'm comfortable with me, you can rely one me" way, and the use of Red, White and Blue, are all reminicent of Uncle Sam. This technique has been used over and over in many ways and styles to instill patriotic feelings in the readers or anyone who just happens to see this picture.

Double Entry Journal #5

When dealing with copyrighted material there is no limitation on amount of the material used, as long as it is properly cited, and sourced.  You must give credit to the copyright owner. When using the material in a school related multimedia project you do not need to contact the owner of the material for permission as long as you again, cite, and source the material. When using material for an education purpose, educators should only use the parts of the material needed. When students are using copyrighted material they must use it in a way that it is not substituting their own work for someones else's, but are using it to add to, or to support their own ideas. In all of these situations, all copyrighted material must be cited and sourced. In the case of students the educators need to teach, monitor and evaluate how to properly cite and source copyrighted material. In some cases the educators can give students a list of proper or selected sources for use to insure that the educator can fully monitor and check for proper citation. I always thought that "if I'm not making money on the it, I can still use it". I never gave any thought to the use of movies in a classroom or school for entertainment purpose was seen as copyright infringement. Every teacher I had in especially the primary education level has shown movies for entertainment or reward. Granted when I was in elementary school the laws may have been more lenient since that was a very long time ago. Though many teacher still do this, it is obviously not strictly enforced in some school and districts.I am already looking forward to using multimedia projects in my future classrooms, and now I am armed with the knowledge and a better understanding of how to properly use copyrighted material.

Quote:
If digital stories are going to survive in education, they need to be tied to the curriculum and used to strengthen students' critical thinking, report writing, and media literacy skills (Ohler)

Response:
I agree with this statement. In this new digital age full of digital media, games, and massive computer use, teaching children these skills in the context of academics is a way to teach and keep them focused and having fun. Writing reports is boring; but making it into a photostory is fun and inovative. It gives them the freedom of expression, and gets thier creative minds to work. They are still learning to do research and using critical thinking based on that research, but its fun. To help tie this in and to better judge thier work (for teachers) not only by thier photo story but have them write a small 1-2 page report on what they learned. Peer review is also an excillent way for them to get feed back and validation for thier work. All in all using photo story is cool.

Quote:
"Given that the general attitude toward text messaging is that it comes from the linguistic bottom, it may well be that this masheen-sent lingua franca may proov to one day be less obleek than it is now."(AmmonShea).

Response:
I do not think that it will truly affect the English language, but it is affecting our writing. Text messaging shorts have been showing up in students writing in school, and I myself have had to catch myself while typing a paper to not type such things as LOL, or WTH. I have even heard teachers of elementary school students comment on finding LOL on their students papers. I do not think that is exactly a problem that will affect anything in the long run, but because it is a habit and students are so use to texting that when typing it just comes out as natural movement of their hands. It comes out more in the younger students and high school age, but as they enter the college realm a more sophisticated form of typing and thinking come the forefront and they are more aware of what they are typing. In the younger ages as long as teachers make it clear that text language is not appropriate for classroom writing, and teach the proper structure and grammar then it should not be too much of a problem.

Technology Comic

Strategies

The strategy I read about was using GPS for a history lesson in a 5th grade class. For a 5th grade class I feel this would be a great lesson. They would jump all over it like a happy monkey. On the high school level this would be a little more complicated. It would work but would have to make it very interesting and attention grabbing. In a history lesson for high school you could make it a group assignment on the state of West Virginia or their home town, and plot locations that can be looked up online or with a phone or GPS and then have them research the location at that point. I had initially thought it would not work on the high school level but with more thought it would be fun and interesting.

I am a mostly Auditory, Writing and Reading Learner

Learner.......

What kind of learner am I? I am all over the board. Mostly Auditory, with Writing and Reading not too far behind. I agree with this assessment; it goes right along with what I already thought. For me I like to hear  stories and other things and then write them down. I also go over notes again and again or rewrite them to remember them. So this assesment was accurate.

Quote: "Technology can help visual students by allowing pictures and other visual aids to be used in the classroom. The teachers can use a lot of colors in their presentations by using computers more than they can by using the white board or the black board because computers have many color options that instructors can utilize. Programs like Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word are good examples of applications that have many color options. Moreover, if teachers give this kind of student papers, it is much better for them to include some pictures in their papers and for them to use different colors in the text" (Wiki books, May 2011).

Response: In today's classrooms, visual learners now have a upper hand on learning. With so much technology available and use in the classroom that teachers on the elementary level tend to use them more. In the elementary schools teachers are more focused on learning styles; where as we leave that single classroom setting we are forced in to a lecture setting and can gives the visual learns a disadvantage.
In the college classroom visual learners are cut short. So many teachers still do not use PowerPoint, or other visual aids in the classroom. Lecture is still the number one form of teaching in college classrooms. This makes it harder for visual learners to visualize the topic and get bored easy. I for one am a combination of the three types, but learn more from writing down then anything else. For me visual aids are almost too stimulating and I prefer to read and write notes and enjoy lecture.

Quote: What if bad writing is a product of the form of writing required in school — the term paper — and not necessarily intrinsic to a student’s natural writing style or thought process?" (Heffernan, Auguast 2007)"

Reaction: I chose this quote because, I feel that yes, in this day and age the "term paper" is seen as a thing of the past, but it is still relevant today. How are we to learn to prove an argument in our own words with proper style and grammar if we are not taught how to. There are ways to convert the "term paper" in to a more modern idea such as blogs; but we will still have to hold students to the proper writing structure, form, grammar, etc. In the real world we still have to write reports, memos, and other written/typed documents. Many employers will not even look at a resume, or application if it is not readable or legible due to spelling, grammar and other writing offenses. “Writing term papers is a dying art, but those who do write them have a dramatic leg up in terms of critical thinking, argumentation and the sort of expression required not only in college, but in the job market,” says Douglas B. Related Resources:The article discusses Cathy Davidson and her want to eradicate the term paper and replace it with blogs. It also discusses how blogs are replacing term papers in everything from MBA to literature course. I am a California Girl lost in the woods of West Virginia. I am here studying Secondary Education, Social Studies. I love history and love to share my knowledge with others; so becoming a teacher is the perfect profession for me. My concentration is The Civil War and Early American History. I would love to teach on the high school level.
You may not be able to tell by my blog title, but I am a twin, and my title is the Cherokee word for Twin I have an identical twin sister and were are of Cherokee Indian decent and are very proud of it. My back ground is of the Cherokee Rose. It is said that the woman of the Cherokees during the Trail of Tears cried and where there tears fell a flower bloomed, (ie Cherokee Rose).
