Gardens of Time reflection

Gardens of Time

1. Interaction: You invite friends to be neighbor. By accepting and having neighbors you interact by visiting each other's gardens and leaving gifts. You can also interact by asking neighbors to send you material you may need to finish a quest on the game.
2. Origination: During the game you have to create a garden of objects retrieved from the different historical scenes you visit during the game.
3. Exploring: The game requires you to visit different scenes in history and discover objects that do not belong in those scenes. Though you are required to find these objects as fast as you can, you are asked to revisit these scenes over and over to find more and more objects. During this sequence of events you learn what objects are by name or sight and how they fit or do not fit in that scene.
4. Ordered Problems: The scenes of the game are at first easier to navigate but as you continue with the quests
and building your garden the quests become harder and require you to find more items in the same amount of time. This requires you to memorize what things are and where they are to accomplish the quest set before you.
5. Context: This game is based on historical places and events and during the game you learn about what an object is you may not have known and what it looks like. It also teaches you where these places were and what they were and why they might be significant.

Double Entry Journal #7

Quote:
"It was not the most outlandish thing she might’ve said, given how little was known about learning disabilities in the early 1950s, and how little training a teacher" (Schultz 2011)

Response:
I chose this quote because until the mid to late 1970's there were no special education teachers, class rooms, or specifications. Learning Disabilities are students with average or above average intelligence that have a difficult time reading. Sadly some teacher still ignore the issue of learning disabilities or try to use that as an excuse to not help or get rid of "problem" children. I know its difficult having upwards to 32 children in a classroom but we have to make time to be the teacher our students need us to be.

I chose the West Virginia RTI guide  (Response To Intervention) because it is a program to combat this exact problem. RTI also called the 3tier system catches possible learning disabilities in the first grade and allows children to get the help they need to achieve their reading goals.

"The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) provides school districts the opportunity to develop research-based procedures for determining whether a student has a specific learning disability.  Traditional identification procedures required a severe discrepancy between the student’s intellectual ability and academic achievement that was often not evidenced until second or third grade, well after the time that most children acquire beginning reading skills.  As a result, young struggling readers often have not received the timely and adequate reading instruction required to prevent lifelong reading difficulties" (RTIguide).
